New HSK Levels Explained (HSK 3.0): All 9 Levels, Words and Characters

The New HSK (HSK 3.0) has nine levels in three stages: Elementary (1–3), Intermediate (4–6) and Advanced (7–9, taken as one exam). Vocabulary grows from 300 words at Level 1 to 11,000 for Levels 7–9.

Word and character counts are the numbered entries in the syllabus. A few written forms repeat with different meanings or pronunciations, so a de-duplicated list is slightly shorter.

What changed from the six-level HSK

  • Bigger start. Level 1 needs 300 words, not 150. See the New HSK 1 word list.
  • Handwriting from Level 2. A 100-character writing list covers Levels 1–2, growing to 1,200 by Levels 7–9. See the 100 characters.
  • Three advanced levels. Levels 7, 8 and 9 share one list and one exam; your score decides the level awarded.
