Start with the exam version on your registration. Current HSK1 is often studied as a compact beginner set, while New HSK Level 1 uses a broader syllabus and a longer foundation. A syllabus effective date does not mean that every test center changed every regular exam on the same day.

Before Day 1: ask your test center which version it will administer on your date.

Listen before reading the transcript
Turn missed items into a small review list

Week 4: retrieval and exam practice

Mix old topics instead of studying one list at a time
Complete timed listening and reading sets
Repair weak areas, then repeat a short mock

A simple readiness check

You are ready to move on when you can:

follow slow beginner audio without reading every line first;
answer familiar questions about yourself, time, family, and daily activities;
finish a short mixed review with a shrinking list of repeated mistakes.

Finishing a vocabulary list is not the same as being ready. Retrieval, listening, and small original output are the better signal.
